Information about the speakers

Massimiliano Fuksas is an Italian all-rounder. He is an architect, designer, humanist, poet and painter at the same time. He completed his architectural studies in Rome in 1969. Shortly thereafter, he opened his first own architectural studio in Rome. In the 1980s he shifted the focus to France. Fuksas has offices in Rome, Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main and Shenzhen. At the end of 2001 he was Artistic Director of Berisch Architecture at the Venice Biennale. Fuksas has been a visiting professor at various universities in Europe and the USA, such as the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the Columbia University in New York. He also has been writing a weekly column in L’Espresso magazine since 2000. In 2002 he became an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and in 2003 a member of the International Academy of Architecture (IAA) in Sofia.

Odile Decq set up her own office just after graduating at La Villette in 1978 while studying at Sciences Politiques Paris where she completed a post-graduate diploma in Urban Planning in 1979. In 1990 she won her first major commission: the Banque Populaire de l’Ouest in Rennes. The numerous prizes and publications that distinguished the building underlined the emergence of a new hope directly born from the punk rebellion which turned old conventions upside down. By questioning the commission, the use, the matter, the body, the technique and the taste Odile Decq’s architecture offers a paradoxical look, both tender and severe on today’s world. She was awarded with a Golden Lion in Venice in 1996. Since then, Odile Decq has been faithful to her fighting attitude while diversifying and radicalizing her research. She completed the MACRO (Museum for Contemporary Art in Rome) in 2010, the Opera Garnier’s restaurant in Paris in 2011 and the FRAC in Rennes in 2012.

Patrik Schumacher first studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Bonn and London South Bank University in 1980. He then completed his studies in architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1990. In 1999 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy from the Institute of Cultural Studies at the University of Klagenfurt. During his studies in London, he did an internship with Zaha Hadid in 1983 and became the most important collaborator for Zaha Hadid. Since 2002 he is partner of the office Zaha Hadid Architects. He was involved in the planning of buildings such as the MAXXI – Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, the central building of the BMW plant in Leipzig and the opera house in Guangzhou. Schumacher became a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1996 and a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts in 2011, in the architecture department. Moreover, Schumacher writes numerous publications and holds public lectures on parametrism worldwide.
