Kim Herforth Nielsen graduated from the Aarhus School of Architecture in 1981. 1986 he founded 3XN in Aarhus together with Lars Frank Nielsen and Hans Peter Svendler Nielsen. Today 3XN runs offices in Copenhagen, Stockholm, New York and Sydney and employs architects from over 20 nations. Nielson has been involved in all the practice’s major projects, including The Blue Planet, Kubus in Berlin, Museum of Liverpool, Ørestad College, Muziekgebouw Concert Hall in Amsterdam, the Danish Embassy in Berlin and the Architects’ House in Copenhagen.
Beside his work in the office he is often called upon as a jury member in international architectural competitions, and as lecturer at art academies and universities around the world. He is a Knight of Dannebrog and has received Denmark’s highest architectural honor, the C.F. Hansen Medaille.

Tatiana Bilbao was born in 1972 in Mexico-City. She studied architecture and urbanism at Universidad Iberoamerica, where she was recipient of the honorable mention for her thesis in 1998.
The philosophy of Tatiana Bilbao Estudio focuses upon how architecture should be designed with the user’s experience in mind, rather than for standalone aesthetic qualities. It is about “making places and spaces, by people, for people,” enhancing how a building is lived in and leaving a trace of those who built it. The practice maintains the ethos of labor-intensive, handmade buildings, providing much-needed jobs in Mexico by trying not to replace people with machines—and ultimately giving the final result a raw energy.
Tatiana Bilbao has held several visiting scholar positions as for example at Luis Kahn Visiting Professorship, Yale School of Architecture in 2015. Also she was Advisor for Urban Projects at the Urban Housing & Development Department of Mexico City (1998-99) and cofounder of architectural think tank Laboratorio de la Ciudad de México (LCM) in 1999. As well she got many awards for her work, including the Berlin Art Prize (2012) for example.

Louis Becker graduated from Aarhus Architectural School in 1989 and ever since worked with Henning Larsen. Today he comprises half of the executive management at Henning Larsen, together with CEO Mette Kynne Frandsen. During three decades at Henning Larsen, he has cultivated a wide spectrum of international experience. His context-driven approach to architecture is recognisable in projects such as the Siemens’ new global headquarters in Munich, Germany, HarpaConcert Hall and Conference Center (winner of the 2013 Mies van der Rohe Award) in Reykjavík, Iceland, and King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
In 2008, Becker was appointed Adjunct Professor at the Aalborg University Institute of Architecture, Design and Media Technology. In 2011, he was awarded the Eckersberg Medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, in recognition of his excellent contributions to elevating the global presence of Danish architecture.

Every architect knows famous buildings – but do you know the people, who design and build them? Who are they and how did they become what they are today? Discover it at our lecture series ‘Architects, not Architecture.’ Come to the Queen’s Hall in the Royal Library on October 11 and meet Kim Herforth Nielsen, Tatiana Bilbao and Louis Becker. They are allowed to talk about anything but their work.
In the past three years the event ‘Architects, not Architects’ ran successfully in Germany and inspired hundreds of architects in various cities. Now it comes to Denmark, Copenhagen. Fermín Tribaldos, Spanish architect and initiator of ‘Architects, not Architecture’ says: “The concept is always the same. The three guest speakers have twenty minutes each to talk about their ideas of architecture and (professional) biography as well as their personal visions and goals. But they are not allowed to talk about any of their projects.”
In Copenhagen two Danish architects and one Mexican architect will share their ideas and background with us. All three are experienced professionals, who build award winning projects around the world.

Kim Herforth Nielson is the driving force behind 3XN since the foundation in 1986. For him the art of architecture is to build a sculpture around the patterns of movement and the synergies that arise between people. Tatiana Bilbao is a Mexican architect whose innovative works often merged geometry with nature. She was committed to collaboration as an essential feature of her work and tries to regenerate spaces in order to humanize them as a reaction to global capitalism, opening up niches for cultural and economic development. Tatiana Bilbao will have a solo exhibition at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2019. Third speaker is Louis Becker from Henning Larsen. Over the three decades at the office, he has played an integral role in the internationalization of Henning Larsen and is spearheading Henning Larsen’s successful entry and positioning in the North American market. He believes that architecture must speak directly to users and give back to the society in which it exists.
