About Speaker

Volkwin Marg was born in 1936 in Königsberg, East Prussia. He studied architecture in Berlin and at the TU Braunschweig from 1958 to 1964. Together with Meinhard von Gerkan, he founded von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp) in 1965. From 1979 to 1983 he was the president of Association of German Architects (BDA), in 1986 he lectured in the field of Urban Planning at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen. Besides that, he is a member of the German Academy of City Development and Regional Planning (DASL) as well as the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK).

He has been awarded numerous awards including Fritz Schumacher Prize, the bronze plaque of the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg as well as the BDA Prize. In 2009, he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st class, and three years later he received an honorary doctorate from the HafenCity University of Hamburg in the Department of Architecture. Marg is the principal of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac), which he co-founded with von Gerkan as part of the gmp Foundation.
