The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a neoclassical building perched atop the Auckland Domain, offering a commanding presence with its grand columns and symmetrical design. Inside, the museum’s layout blends classical grandeur with modern exhibition spaces, featuring soaring atriums, expansive galleries, and refined detailing that enhance the visitor experience. The integration of natural light, open circulation, and contemporary additions harmonizes the museum’s historical significance with its evolving role as a cultural and educational hub.

About the Speakers

Marcio Kogan began his professional career as a movie maker to then switch to architecture. We can say though that architecture and cinematography have a lot of similarities: the two arts deal with a spatial and temporal structure. Architecture and Cinema create space that generates experiences, for the most different life’s situations.  Marcio directed 30 short movies and tried directing a long movie, which unfortunately did not reach the expected success. It was at this moment that he decided to dedicate himself completely to architecture. His cinematographic background and themes are still taken into account when he designs: light, widescreen and storytelling. Widescreen influenced a lot of his work and storytelling helps him to imagine a story around the building, where he creates a character who lives and experiences the space. It was in 2014, when he got invited to the Venice Biennale, that he decided to momentarily go back to cinematography and presented a short movie called “This was not my dream”, directed by his son. Today Marcio, among his other passions, loves to collect pieces, gifts that bring back memories. In his office we can find a little museum of objects, going from a clapperboard that he used for his movies to a signed picture of Fellini. mk27.com

Bárbara Dundes is a professional who grows with her talent and creativity.  She founded her own office 12 years ago, and since then, has carried out projects in São Paulo and other cities in Brazil, together with a multidisciplinary team of collaborators. She went to college in Centro Universitário Belas Artes, São Paulo, and is passionate about traveling and brings new references and inspirations from her experiences around the world. Showing the personality and characteristics of each client, with the essence of their creations, is the firm’s biggest difference. With the aim of providing innovative and emotional experiences, the architect prioritizes understanding the personality of each client, bringing their particular feeling into the project, through textures, colors and design. With sensitivity, Bárbara brings together residential and commercial projects in various parts of Brazil, in each work with a modern and contemporary concept, which works perfectly when harmonized with sophisticated details and natural elements. The result is a balance between signed objects, works of art, and room completions. She already holds important titles as being the winner in the VEJA SP Award for Best Environment at CASACOR 2022 in the “studio” category with “Estúdio Bereshí”, a 47m² space that is a true refuge. barbaradundes.com.br

Gustavo Penna was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He graduated from the School of Architecture at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he later taught for over 30 years. In 1974, he founded GPA&A, an architecture studio known for its sensitive approach to place, memory, and identity. With a career spanning five decades, Gustavo has designed a wide range of projects, from cultural and educational buildings to urban interventions and memorials. His architecture is marked by poetic clarity, deep respect for context, and a commitment to social meaning.

He is a member of the boards of the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation and the Fundação Dom Cabral, and a founding member of the Academy of Schools of Architecture and Urbanism of the Portuguese Language (AEAULP). His work has been awarded internationally and exhibited in venues such as the Venice Biennale, the Institut Français d’Architecture in Paris, and Casa da Arquitectura in Portugal.
