Information about the speakers

Einar Jarmund is a Norwegian architect born in 1962. He is founder of Einar Jarmund & Co AS Arkitekter MNAL, an Oslo-based NAL (Norske Arkitekter Landsforbund) registered architecture and design studio established in April 2019. It was founded as Jarmund/Vigsnæs AS Arkitekter MNAL in 1996 by Einar Jarmund and Håkon Vigsnæs. Einar Jarmund graduated from the School of Architecture in Oslo 1987 and gained a Masters Degree in Architecture at the University of Washington 1989 in Seattle, Washington, USA. After leading his own architecture office until 1992, he worked for several architects in Seattle and Oslo and co-founded JVA in 1996, an office which was awarded with the Grosch Medal 2018 for “projects that have been, and will continue to be, of importance to the development of Norwegian architecture” and “maintaining high standards and the vitality needed to produce architecture at an international level”. The firm is located in Oslo, Norway, and is working on a wide architectural range with commissions mainly in Norway but also in other European countries.

Kari Nissen Brodtkorb, born in 1942, is one of Norway’s leading residential architects, graduated from the Norwegian University of Technology in 1965, later studies at Columbia University, New York. After 15 years as an architect at Harald Hille and Anker & Hølaas AS, she became a partner at the latter in 1980. In 1985 she founded her own architectural firm; Arkitektkontoret Kari Nissen Brodtkorb AS.
From 1990 to 1994 she was also a professor at the Oslo School of Architecture. For over 35 years, the award-winning architectural firm has designed a number of large residential complexes and multifunctional projects in Norway and other countries, including Gothenburg Central Station. The office has been widely awarded several prizes including the Houen Foundation Award for her Stranden complex located on Oslo’s Aker Brygge (later protected). In 2014, Kari Nissen Brodtkorb was awarded the Anders Jahres Kulturpris based on the following reasons: “Kari Nissen Brodtkorb represents the foremost of a generation of Norwegian architects who, with insight and integrity, have further developed the most profound tools of architecture.”

Todd Saunders is a Canadian architect who founded the studio Saunders Architecture based in Bergen, Norway, in 1998. The award-winning firm has completed cultural and residential projects around the world, with a bold modern aesthetic that combines a strong sense of place with an emphasis on craftsmanship and meticulous detailing. Every project represents a carefully managed relationship between architecture and nature. This respect for remote, spectacular and often challenging sites is paired with a strong social ethos and belief in the role of architecture as a meaning of invigorating and sustaining communities. Their projects include the Fogo Island Inn and artists’ studios in Newfoundland, Canada, the Illusuak Cultural Centre in Nain, Labrador, Canada, and the Solberg Tower on the Norway-Sweden border demonstrate this multi-layered approach. Innovative forms are paired with traditional construction techniques, ensuring a dynamic cultural and social continuum.

One year after we held our first event in Oslo, we will be back in Norway at Vulkan Arena on September 19!

Architects, not Architecture or “AnA” – as the name suggests – provides a glimpse on great personalities of architecture. The event series is not about the projects of the architects, but the people behind, their professional backgrounds and formative individual experiences, that shaped the projects we all know.

On 19 September 2019, two Norwegian and one Canadian (Bergen-based) architect will talk about their personal experiences and important creative periods within their work and, as always at “AnA“, not a word may be lost about their projects themselves:

The three of them are well-known names for their significant and fascinating work. Kari Nissen Brodtkorb, architect and educator, is recognized as one of Norway’s most relevant housing designers. Her architecture stroke not only due to the economic and practical factors of housing but as well as precious and characteristic factors. Einar Jarmund, who founded in 2019 “Einar Jarmund & Co AS Arkitekter MNAL” after twenty years partnership with Håkon Vigsnæs at Jarmund/Vigsnæs AS Arkitekter, is driven by an untiring ambition to understand the spirit of the places, both urban and rural. The Canadian-born and Bergen-based Todd Saunders Architecture works with dynamic building and material experimentation with traditional methods and a strong contemporary design sensibility.

Look forward to exciting lectures and discussions with our inspiring guest speakers.
Doors open at 5pm. The talks will start at 6pm.

The event will be held in English.
