Sadie Morgan is a founding director of leading architectural practice dRMM. Over a 25-year career she has played a key role in the advocacy of exemplary design and architecture, through her professional practice and advisory roles. She became the youngest and only third ever-female President of the Architectural Association in 2013. As a design champion she is involved in a number of advisory roles including chairing the Independent Design Panel for High Speed Two, reporting directly to the Secretary of State and being one of ten commissioners for the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC). With fellow founding directors Alex de Rijke and Philip Marsh she is pushing the boundaries of design through projects like Sliding House, One Centaur Street, Kingsdale School, Trafalgar Place, Maggie’s Oldham and the Stirling prize winning Hastings Pier. Lecturing extensively both nationally and internationally, Morgan talks passionately about the role of architects in society and the importance of infrastructure which connects to people and places.
Jonathan Sergison was born in 1964 in St. Asaph, UK. He graduated from the Architectural Association in 1989 and gained professional experience working for David Chipperfield and Tony Fretton. In 1996 he established Sergison Bates architects in London with Stephen Bates. Jointly responsible for the design direction of the practice Jonathan now leads the Zurich studio, which opened in 2010. Sergison Bates work at different scales and their projects range from urban planning to public buildings and housing and are currently involved in a wide range projects at home and abroad. Jonathan Sergison has taught at a number of schools of architecture. In addition to his academic commitments, he lectures widely, has served on a number of prestigious international juries, and writes regularly on architecture.
Ian Ritchie leads one of the world’s most thoughtful, original and influential contemporary collaborative architectural practices which has received over 100 national and international awards. Ian is a Royal Academician and elected member of the Akademie der Künste. He is Honorary Visiting Professor of Architecture Liverpool University; Fellow of the Society of Façade Engineering; Emeritus Commissioner CABE and advises Backstage Trust. Recently he was advisor to The Ove Arup Foundation, the Director of the Centre for Urban Science and Progress NYU, and to the President of Columbia University on the Manhattanville masterplan. He has chaired many international juries including RIBA Stirling Prize, the RIAS Doolan Award, Berlin Art Prize, Czech Architecture Grand Prix Jury and the French government’s ‘Nouveaux Jeunes Albums’. He was a founder director of Rice Francis Ritchie, a design engineering practice based in Paris. He continues to lecture globally, has written several books, including poetry, and Ian’s art is held in several international galleries and museums.

Premiere! The event series Architects, not Architecture will hold its first edition in England. Every architect knows famous buildings – but do you know the people, who designed and built them? Who are they and how did they become what they are today? You will find the answers, and a lot more, at the Royal Institution (Ri) on October 24.
The concept has already inspired hundreds of people in different cities. Architects, not Architecture or “AnA” – as the name suggests – provides a glimpse on great personalities of architecture. The event series is not about the projects of the architects, but about them, their professional backgrounds and formative individual experiences that shaped the projects we all know. This provides new perspectives and inspires on a more personal level. Come to the Royal Institution and discover a new kind of event series.
On October 24, three relevant British architects will talk about their personal experiences and important creative periods in their lives and, as always at “AnA“, not a word may be lost about their projects:

The three of them are well-known for their significant work. Sadie Morgan believes in the importance of connecting design with a place and people. Alongside being the Director and Co-founder of RIBA Stirling Prize-winning practice dRMM, she is widely involved in a number of advisory roles. These include being the Chair of the Independent Design Panel for High Speed Two, Commissioner and Chair of the National Infrastructure Commission Design Group and Mayor’s design advocate for the Greater London Authority’s ‘Good Growth by Design’ agenda. Jonathan Sergison is particularly interested in urban questions and the changing conditions of the contemporary European city. He discusses the role housing might play in this changing context. More specifically, he has addressed this through writing, teaching, and practice. Sergison Bates architects have earned a reputation as one of the UK’s leading architectural practices by successfully engaging with all dimensions of architectural and urban design. The architect, artist, and author Ian Ritchie is renowned for research and its innovative perspectives, having more than 30 World Firsts in architectural geometry, engineering, and material technique. For Ian Ritchie “the democratic value of progress can only have a long-term life when it grafts itself onto the strong metaphorical stem of the human spirit – individually and collectively, our practice has always designed architecture to encourage and sustain this strength”.
