MOIRA MOSER

Moira Moser’s Talk

Moira Moser gained an international education and founded M Moser Associates in Hong Kong in 1981, a four decade-long firm started as a three-person office that now counts over 1000 collaborators with 20 offices spread across four continents. This Hong Kong-based Californian architect shared with us the travel experiences and the journeys that shaped her career and personality.

Already as a kid, Moira was surrounded by artists and creative people and, already at the age of nine, she had a clear idea about taking up an architectonical career. We can consider Moira Moser a dynamic personality that loved to collect experiences from every place she visited. She found a strong power in religious and civil buildings and the first inspiring place she experienced was the Cologne Dome, in Germany. From Germany, to Turkey, from Rotterdam to Paris and from New York back to California where she registered at UC Berkeley’s School of Architecture. She always tried to combine both theoretical studies with practical works and experiences.

It’s in the 70’s that her professional career took off. Her and her husband moved to Iran, where he was originally from and opened a small architectural practice. Iran at that time was becoming an exciting destination for architects. Her life there was culturally and intellectually full. She was part of the International Conference of Women Architects, with other important personalities, such as Denise Scott Brown, Hunting Gay Allenty, Allison Smithson and joined the US based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. It is thanks to this association that she traveled to Hong Kong for the first time to study tall buildings and shortly after, as the political situation in Iran was getting bad, she moved permanently there, where she still lives.

At the time Hong Kong was going through a change and a lot of American and European companies were setting up there. Economic development transformed Hong Kong into one of the richest and most productive regions in Asia and as Moser stated in her talk with us “Hong Kong today is a visually sophisticated urban environment of many tall buildings.”

In 2004, Moira was recognized as Hong Kong’s ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by the Women of Influence group, and in 2008 received the prestigious Legend Award at the Contract Annual Design Award in New York. In 2013, Moira was elected to The College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects.
