Let’s explore circular building together

The challenge of our generation is to build with a lighter impact. Knowing that the building industry is key to tackling climate change, we as a façade material producer want to do more than just transform our materials. By 2030, we want to forge new and innovative partnerships, trailblaze transparency across the value chain and establish a sustainability council of external experts to stay on track to full circularity.

Silent Green Kulturquartier is an event venue and independent project that has found a unique home in Berlin in the historic premises of the former crematorium in Wedding. Between 1993 and 1996, a new underground building was added to the Wedding crematorium, which was only in operation for about 6 years until the site was closed at the end of 2002. The 1600sqm concrete hall with a height of 6m has been preserved.

About the Speakers

Amin Taha, born in Berlin, embarked on an independent architectural journey after gaining experience in the offices of Zaha Hadid, Wilkinson Eyre, and others. In 2003, he established his independent studio and incorporated Groupwork as an Employee Ownership Trust, where he currently serves as chairman. In addition to managing the design and detailing of projects, Amin has been actively involved in teaching, writing, and lecturing on architecture. He has also served as a juror on the RIBA National and International Awards and supported property-related research groups and funds. Groupwork’s portfolio spans various sectors, including finely crafted homes, residential and office buildings, arts centers, masterplans, infrastructure projects, bridges, and metro stations. The practice is recognized internationally for its built work, boasting multiple RIBA National Awards, a shortlist nomination for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2017, and two nominations for the EU Mies Award in 2019. www.groupwork.uk.com

Wiebke Ahues studied architecture at the University of Dortmund and the Technical University of Dresden. As a project and office manager, she worked for many years in renowned offices such as Max Dudler, David Chipperfield and Henning Larsen and was responsible for top-class, international projects and competitions. She has been an associate partner at LXSY Architekten since the beginning of 2024. Her many years of expertise have taught her to view architecture holistically and with a circular approach. As an ambassador for the Bauwende, Wiebke is actively committed to circular planning and building. For her, creating sustainable architecture means working with what is there or grows back. Wiebke was appointed as a member of the BDA Berlin in 2021. As a board member of the Berlin Chamber of Architects since 2022, she is committed to advancing the social discourse on shaping a sustainable future. lxsy.de

Omar Gandhi founded Omar Gandhi Architects (OG)  in 2010, and has design studios in Toronto and Halifax, Canada. The internationally honoured practice has produced a portfolio of architecture and other designed products for projects ranging from homes and innovative urban in-fills to medium and large scale public works, and historic landscapes Gandhi and his highly collaborative OG team create architecture that responds in often remarkable ways to design briefs. The practice’s critically acclaimed work continues to attract ambitious clients, and this has been key to architecturally sophisticated projects such as the Schlotfeldt Residence in British Columbia’s Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, the Rabbit Snare Gorge cabin in Nova Scotia, and OGA’s remarkable landform-like intervention at the historically important Peggy’s Cove site in Nova Scotia. The practice’s honors include the Canada Council for the Arts Professional Prix de Rome, Architectural Record Magazine’s 2018 Design Vanguard, and the Canadian Governor General’s Medal in Architecture. Omar Gandhi was a Louis I. Kahn visiting Assistant Professor in Architectural Design at the Yale School of Architecture, and was named among Monocle magazine’s Most Influential Canadians. www.omargandhi.com
