In the work of Richards and Spence Architects private development\, from the scale of a window to a silhouette on the skyline\, is a catalyst for public life. The practice is best known for its contribution to Brisbane’s James Street Precinct\, including The Calile Hotel and Ada Lane. Realised over more than a decade\, this prodigious body of work has helped shape the precinct as a distinctive piece of Brisbane\, where architecture\, landscape\, interiors and public life are deftly conceived as a continuous experience. Both graduates of the University of Queensland\, Ingrid and Adrian\, have practised in Brisbane for more than two decades. Their work is shaped by the subtropical conditions of Queensland and characterised by material permanence\, spatial generosity and a reductive approach to form. Interiors and landscapes are considered inseparable from architecture – part of the same spatial\, material and atmospheric proposition.Across projects of varying scale and type\, the studio is interested in architecture that extends beyond the brief – buildings that contribute to the activity of the street\, respond meaningfully to climate and place\, and become enduring parts of the cities they create. Monique Woodward FRAIA is Co-Founder and Creative Director of WOWOWA Architecture & Interiors\, a B Corp-certified practice established in 2010 on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country. Known as “spatial biographers\,” WOWOWA creates award-winning\, narrative-rich spaces designed to be both intimate and publicly generous. Beyond practice\, Monique is a prominent advocate and thought leader who served for a decade as an Australian Institute of Architects Victorian and National Councillor. She received the AIA National Emerging Architect Prize in 2018\, co-curated the 2019 AIA National Conference\, and served on the National Gender Equity\, Diversity and Impact Committee. She is also a Dulux Study Tour alumna. Angelo Candalepas LFRAIA is Founder and Director of Angelo Candalepas and Associates\, established in Sydney in 1999. His work spans housing\, heritage\, education\, civic and cultural architecture and has received numerous Australian and international honours\, including the Royal Institute of British Architects International Award for Excellence\, the Sir John Sulman Medal\, the Harry Seidler Award\, and the NSW Premier’s Prize for Architecture. Current projects include The Fox: NGV Contemporary and work at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne\, alongside Royal Far West and St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney.
